I’m thrilled to announce that Bear Call Mastering has opened in the beautiful Hudson Valley. Instead of the droning of sirens and crashing of dump trucks, we’re now surrounded by the call of the wild. The acoustics in the new space sound fantastic and there’s been a nice equipment upgrade, records will sound better than ever. In addition to mastering, we’re also adding audio services for artists and interactives, and post-production sound for films. Come visit, and inquire about our cabin in the hills!

Tony Conrad Archive Project Released

For the last year I’ve been working on sound restoration and rough mastering for 600+ tracks recorded by the late Tony Conrad. The project was organized by Cory Arcangel and the final web archive was released last week.

Just finished a great new record by Fred the Godson with excellent production by Heatmakerz. There are a lot of great guests on this fine record, even the Magna Carte; Jay Z graces the record for a song.

‘My Old Lady’ Out Now

The respected playwright Israel Horovitz (father of another Horovitz, Ad-Rock of the Beastie Boys) has a new film out staring Kevin Kline, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Maggie Smith. It’s a fine film essential set in an old Parisian town house that only a playwright could pen.

“Despondent New Yorker Mathias Gold (Kevin Kline) ventures to Paris with plans of liquidating the apartment inherited from his late father, but runs into an unexpected roadblock when he discovers that the flat is currently inhabited by his father’s former lover, an elderly Englishwoman named Mathilde Girard (Maggie Smith), and her adult daughter Chloé (Kristin Scott Thomas). “

I mastered the soundtrack at Spleenless Mastering which will be out shortly. It has a gorgeous score by Mark Orton.

It’s currently in limited run theaters so check it out if its playing near you.

There’s new record out this week by the Brooklyn band Slothrust, on Ba Da Bing Records that I mastered last summer. They just release a new video on MTV to go with the record release.

“Can you make them sound better?”

Making special masters for digital delivery is in fact nothing new. Long before Apple offered official guidelinesfor audio engineers to follow, mastering engineers already made their own attempts to create master recordings that sounded “better” when compressed into the standard iTunes Plus format. Even in the early days of the MP3’s rise to popularity, mastering services offered custom encoding.

“In the early digital delivery days, each mastering engineer experimented around until he found an encoder that he liked,” Hull said. “But it always depended on the source material. Different encoders worked differently on jazz as compared to dance music, for instance.”

Apple has always done its own encoding for the iTunes Store, but other stores that sell MP3s generally allow direct uploading of compressed files. Remastering source material for different encoders wasn’t practical, but choosing a specific encoder to best match the source could give better results. “So we would encode them ourselves and try and make it better, and we could in fact make them sound better,” Hull said.
